The supports and processes of Daniel Canogar's work reflect, among other issues, the impact of technology on the dynamics of production and exchange or dissemination —of experiences, ideas, emotions— in which we collectively participate.
In order to offer us a snapshot of how rowdy we live our time, the artist presents Turbulence at Max Estrella. To do so, he refers to the history of art, the textile tradition and the digital tool that has vastly impacted how we perceive and interact with other people and what surrounds us.
The exhibition thus explores our capacity to order, process and make sense of the uncontainable flow of news. Or in other words: how fit we are to cope in an age of infoxication or information overload such as ours.
Turbulence is articulated, according to the artist, through two series:
The first series, Pixelweavers, draws on textiles as a metaphor for the social fabric created, and sometimes destroyed, by the news. These artworks pay tribute to the close relationship between information technology and textiles. Studio Daniel Canogar has developed a virtual loom based on craft techniques. This algorithmic tool enables the creation of a wide range of patterns from different sources or “wool balls”.
The second one, Wayward, is inspired by the postwar artists who began to use photographs from the press. Screen prints, photomontages, collages and other appropriation techniques largely dominated this era. Pictures from the daily news are digitally processed with visual effects that evoke analog and photochemical techniques of the past. Through this constant flux of news, this procedural artwork never ceases to generate itself.
