Ana Matey, Mónica Mura & Alba Soto. Performance: Ritual, repetition and resurgence. Curated by Nerea Ubieto

February 28th - March 17th, 2024

EMMA MOLINA GALLERY

Calle de Belén, 2. Madrid. Spain

During the next Madrid Art Week, the group exhibition Intervalos identitarios (Identity Intervals) can be visited in the ephemeral space provided by the Mexican gallery Emma Molina. The common thread of the project is the void, the parenthesis, the interval that can be perceived in the works exhibited by the artists Alex Hank (Mexico City, 1973), Carlos Lara (Monterrey, 1994), Luciano Matus (Mexico City, 1971) and Guillermo Santamarina.

However, Ritual, repetition and resurgence, the parallel programme of performance, curated by Nerea Ubieto, stands out, where the latter combines the artistic practices of Ana Matey, Mónica Mura and Alba Soto, who use iteractive action to reflect on aspects of our present linked to social actuality, to tradition or to the most purely vital.

The work by Alba Soto, in charge of the first event, which will take place on Friday 1st March, is based on subconscious ideals that she orders through the materials and objects she works with. Her performance Conjuro para un laxo infinito (Incantation for an infinite laxity) raises possibilities for strengthening the skills of adaptation and fluidity in the face of a difficult experiential situation and invites the spectator to nourish themselves with this healing ritual.

Mónica Mura, in line with the feminist approach that characterises her work, tackles in Cuntzertu Pro Sonallas, on view on Wednesday 6th March, a tradition from her native island, Sardinia, in which only men take part, and updates it to include women through the power of repetition and the ancestral sound of the cowbells. The modification of popular rituals is key in the construction of new identity policies that allow for an equitable renaissance in the participation of both genders.

Another type of resurgence, directly from our own ashes, is what Ana Matey proposes in Sobre la Ruina, programmed for Saturday 9th March, an action related to displacement and home that connects with the artist's biography and with the social moment on a global level. The acceptance of the fall, however many times it is repeated, is key to being able to get up stronger and work on resilience.

In all of them, sound will play a key role, whether through the voice, the instruments or the movement of the body.
