Alina Muressan. El viaje del agua

January 28th - February 8th, 2025

ESPACIO MADOS

Calle del Conde de Xiquena, 12. Madrid. Spain

Alina Muressan has spent the last decade researching and finding things to marvel at in everyday routines, documenting them and subsequently creating an imaginary landscape of the cities where she has lived: Mexico City and Madrid.

Her artistic project, El viaje del agua, is the fruit of the gaze of a migrant who, after six years in Mexico, decides to return to her city to discover its nooks and crannies, its colours and its shapes. For this reason, her works speak of Madrid through the idiosyncrasies of its districts and neighbourhoods.

The title refers to the water journeys, a system of distribution through a vast network of underground canals that supply Madrid. The history proposed to us, then, thanks to the set of 15 works that it presents, has its origins in the times when there were waterways through which life and prosperity were distributed to those who inhabited the city and left their mark on Madrid: different civilisations and cultures.

Muressan walk along through the different districts to discover both the secret corners and the history latent in the buildings and monuments. And she paints in Chinese ink the dialogues between the most iconic buildings and the parks or rivers, for example. She does not copy what we all see, but paints on a different scale what overlaps the murmur of the city: the existence of another diverse and beautiful landscape behind the routine that distracts us.

The exhibition offers a visual memory of Madrid that highlights the changes and the send of time. But above all, it composes a fiction based on everyday reality, linking past and present in such a way that the viewer becomes a flâneur and loses himself in the streets painted by Muressan. In them he finds the human connections lost in the city. Or in his words: "A work of synthesis of the urban landscape that surrounds us, which forces the spectator to stop, observe and breathe in a time when everything happens too fast".

El viaje del agua is the culmination of a six-year journey through Mexico. It began in Mexico City (2017-2019) with the project Caos Mágico. Un viaje por Ciudad de México, the result of the impact that the great metropolis has on the artist; it sent through the state of Oaxaca (2020-2022), with La punta del guaje. A journey through the state of Oaxaca, where she discovers the mysterious paths and amazing landscapes of the region; and now she concludes in Madrid.

All visitors can discover her mastery with the brush and Chinese ink, but also the interests that drive Muressan's artistic production. Her way of understanding the landscape, which springs from the need to be part of the place. And from this, she builds a visual world that is as exuberant and chaotic as it is poetic and witty.
