Antonio Saura. Pintar como querer
From September 14th to November 6th, 2023
Opera Gallery
Calle de Serrano, 56. Madrid. Spain
On 22 July it is 25 years since Antonio Saura passed away, which is why Opera Gallery would like to pay tribute to one of the most important Spanish artists of the 20th century.
Antonio Saura. Pintar como querer brings together a careful selection of his works, produced since 1958, which includes more than 50 works on paper and around a dozen canvases that deal with some of his best known series such as Autos de Fe, Cabezas, Crucifixiones, Damas, Desnudos, Multitudes, Sudarios and El Perro de Goya. The exhibition is rounded off by a display of 19 of his most iconic posters.
The exhibition is a look at the set of themes that Saura tackled and which earned him recognition and prestige on the national and international circuit. An opportunity to delve into and delight in the intellectual, emotional and aesthetic substratum of the founder of the El Paso group, a collective that laid the foundations and conceptualised the Spanish post-war avant-garde. The exhibition catalogue will include an introductory study by Juan Manuel Bonet, critic and expert on the artist's work.
The exhibition will also include the presentation of the catalogue raisonné of Antonio Saura's posters, drawn up by Olivier Weber-Caflisch and Jean-Charles Giroud, published by the Fondation Archives Antonio Saura, which brings together all the posters created by Antonio Saura, as well as those conceived by third parties for individual or collective exhibitions or other events.
Antonio Saura. Pintar como querer is the result of a collaboration between the Succession Antonio Saura, the Fondation Archives Antonio Saura and Opera Gallery.
