Lita Cabellut. La niña en la mirada (Iniciaciones mistéricas de la pintura de Lita Cabellut)
May 9th - June 8th, 2024
Opera Gallery
Calle de Serrano, 56. Madrid. Spain
Opera Gallery presents Lita Cabellut's first exhibition in Madrid. An unprecedented series of 18 portraits inspired by the Fiesta de la Maya, during which the child protagonists dress up with flowers and celebrate the arrival of spring. Medium and large-format portraits that show a mastery of colour and a complex composition. The figurations are, in Cabellut's terms, "deconstructed" and then torn apart, revealing a background that cannot be fully seen.
Lita Cabellut (Sariñena, Huesca, 1961) lives and works in the Netherlands, where she was named Artist of the Year 2021. Cabellut has developed a unique style characterised by large-scale canvases that combine traditional techniques and modern applications. Social issues and humanity are central themes for Lita Cabellut, which she communicates through her monumental portraits.
The Fiesta de la Maya commemorates the resurgence of spring. This story of pagan roots, dating back to the 16th century, in which the fruits of the earth acquire an ornamental quality, is the pretext that has served Lita Cabellut to use the 'child' as an allegory of artistic and vital experience as freedom, play, radical irony, absolute capacity for astonishment and initial undiscipline and to develop a series that highlights her exceptional ability to handle colour.
The exhibition is an invitation to deep reflection on the origin of the gaze and its importance as a source of renewal for the world. As Fernando Castro Flórez, author of the critical text accompanying the exhibition, points out: "In the month of flowers, Lita Cabellut's imagination germinates, inciting us to live life, through painting, enjoying the "tears", with full awareness of the depth of the skin, like an initiation, with a joyful rebirth. We have, from the beginning, the child in our eyes. In our pupil we welcome the beautiful mystery of the world".
"Focus our gaze on light, colour, life. Life is a source of reconstruction of ourselves. These portraits are in these difficult times, the motivation and the impulse to observe the beauty and the beginning of life in great detail". Lita Cabellut.
